Black headed gulls

The Black headed gull ( Larus ridibundus) is a common winter and passage visitor to the Bexhill area, with a few non-breeding birds remaining all year.

At this time of year we get a fair few around the Galley hill area and these present great opportunities for photography, especially as they occur in such a wide range of plumages, first winter, non breeding, and breeding plumage are all seen, as well as plenty of stages in between.

I particularly wanted to have a go at getting them in flight, so spent a rather pleasant hour taking lots of shots, these are some of them....

Winter plumage adult

Tried a bit of a rule of thirds shot, which was helped by the fact that the bird was looking in the direction of the negative space.

off centre nearly full summer dress

A nice overhead shot

flying overhead, adult gaining summer plumage

And then one flew past at nearly eye level, so got this lovely shot to finish with.

coming into land, nearly full breeding plumage

I do love photographing the gulls so will be doing a lot more of this over the next few weeks.
