Shades of grey

It is a little strange I'm sure that when most photographers showcase a set of works using the handle 'shades of grey' their work doesn't usually feature Herring gulls; it's usually something else entirely!

However I do enjoy photographing the local gulls, and there are a couple of places here in Bexhill where they show off to their best.

I love the challenge of trying to get interesting and different flight shots; it often takes several attempts, generally playing around with auto focus and manual focus, although the real trick is often to make sure you have your setting right and be ready for anything...

Then there's the trick of getting interesting standing shots, it's all to easy just to go for the stealing chips and squabbling shots, if you actually look at them gulls are quite majestic, highly adaptive and intelligent creatures, this is something that I like to try to capture..

Sometimes a place is just linked with a certain animal, to some extent Hastings is often associated with Herring gulls; a fact that I tried to capture in this shot of an adult with Hastings stretching out in the background.....
