Another study in black and white....a fishy business

As I was at Drusillas I decided to spend some time with the colony of Humbolt Penguins, I arrived about 30 minutes before feeding time, so the birds were lazily swimming round in a flock, preening and generally waiting patiently to be fed. This gave the perfect oppurtunity not only to catch some nice portrait style shots but also to get some interesting angles and behaviours........

When penguins are in waiting mode they circle round their pool, this gives the chance to set up on one circuit and then just wait for them to come round again........

came nice and close

beady eye!

almost stately posing

After a few laps of the pool several decided it was preening time, this was really what I was waiting for as it gave the oppurtunity to get those odd angle quirky shots that I like to get every once in a while.....

just under the armpit.....

sometimes you've just got to scratch your.........

a nice belly scratch!

And then I got the impression that they thought it was time for me to go..........

waving goodbye!

These shots shows the real trick of animal photography, learning their behaviours! When you have a fair idea of what the subject is going to do, and when they will be doing it, you can prepare for the shots, and also target the images you want to get!
